Penn Valley, Ca.
Now in its 13th year, the Penn Valley Daffodil Run is a Penn Valley Area "Signature Event".
The Daffodil Run is presented by the Penn Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, the Penn Valley High Graders Lions Club and the Penn Valley Rotary Club. Proceeds from the race provide funds to purchase Daffodil Bulbs for the Penn Valley Daffodil Planting Program.
Eventually Daffodils will line the major roads in the Penn Valley area.
The contest between Ready Springs/Vantage point; Pleasant Valley/ Williams Ranch and Clear Creek schools continues. The school with the greatest percent of runners and walkers signing up in support of the school, based on school enrollment, will win $500, second place $200 and third place $100.
New this year! A $500 scholarship will be given to a graduating senior in Nevada County. Also new, $500 will be donated to the Penn Valley Sign project. Penn Valley Rotary, Penn Valley Lions, Penn Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Penn Valley Rodeo Association are completing a project to put signage in Western Gateway Park announcing Penn Valley events.
There are three events in the Daffodil run. First: at 8:30 there is a Free Kid's run (children 10 and under). This event is run inside the park on a grassy field. All the kids get a nice medal when they finish.
At 8:45 the 5k run and 10k runs start on Penn Valley Drive. The 5k Walk starts at 8:50am inside the park on the bicycle path. Runner will stay on the road for one mile and turn right on Spenceville Road. Walkers will walk on dirt path to Ready Springs School and then continue around R. S school and then back onto the dirt path back to WGP to the walkers Finish Line. One lane of Spenceville Road will be closed for the race. There is a water stop at the 5k /turn around for walkers and 5k runners.
The 10k runners will continue on Spenceville Road, cross Indian Springs Road, and continue another 1/2 mile to the second water stop/turn around. Due to the lane closure and it's resulting disruption of local traffic, 10k runners must be able to run at a 13 minute mile pace minimum. There will be a 18 minute "cut off" at the 5k turnaround. 10K runners will return on Spenceville Road to Penn Valley Drive. Runners and walkers must stay in the same lane they used going out when they return. CHP and Nevada Country Officers and Volunteers will be controlling the course.
