Yuba City AFS Volunteers Thank Local Host Families

Yuba City, CA 3/27/2013 –-- AFS-USA’s Silver & Gold Team would like to recognize local families who have opened their homes and Yuba City to the world by hosting AFS Exchange Students. Each year, AFS (formerly American Field Service) celebrates Host Family Appreciation Month in March.

AFS, a worldwide nonprofit, has been leading international high school student exchange for more than 60 years.
• The Milner family is hosting Karlee from Australia during the 2012-2013 school year.
• The Buschmann family is hosting Martin from France during the 2012-2013 school year and Gadir from Russia this Spring.
• The Mackensen family is hosting Pia from Germany during the 2012-2013 school year.

The Yuba-Sutter area has a long history of involvement with AFS and has welcomed high school students from other countries since 1953. American students from Yuba City have also studied abroad with AFS to countries like France, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and Japan

"Without the curiosity about other cultures and kindness of our local host families, the AFS mission would go unfulfilled - fostering peace through cultural understanding. Plus, the local volunteers are grateful to the host families because we also have the opportunity to interact with the hosted students from all over the world. It is a win-win situation!” said Maria, a local AFS volunteer.

More than 2,300 AFS Exchange Students arrive in the US each year from more than 90 countries, live with local host families and study at area high schools. AFS is always looking for supportive families to host students like these.
