News From the Brownsville Bailiwick & Beyond

Do any of our readers remember eating at Chiseler’s Inn in Marysville, perhaps during the 1970s? Having a great hamburger at One-Eyed Jacks last week, I was reminded of the memorabilia hung on the walls at Chiseler’s. A great way to pass the time while the cook gets your meal together.

The museum in Forbestown is gearing up for summer. It is the main project of The Yuba Feather Historical Assn. Their spring membership meeting will be held at Ponderosa Community Center on April 22. The potluck is the first item on the agenda, bring a dish about 6:00 pm and get ready to eat with friends and neighbors at 6:30. David Giles will be our speaker after dinner. We hope you put a visit to the museum on your calendar this summer.

The Twin Cities Dancers will be holding another dance on Saturday April 18 at 7 pm. They gather at the VFW 4956 Powerline road in Olivehurst. They feature ballroom dancing as well as country western and line dancing. For more information: twincitiesdancers@gmail.com.

It will be time to get a new fire permit soon. One way to do it locally is to attend a Forbestown Community Meeting at the community hall on Sat. April 11 from 1:00 to 3:00. There will be guest speakers, door prizes, and refreshments, as well as obtaining your fire permit.

Don’t forget the Hilltop Gang Breakfast at the Ponderosa Community Center from 8 – 11 on the second Sunday of each month: April 11 this month. All you can eat for $6.00 is great!

During the next few weeks we will be trying to get you information about some of the hiking trails in our area. The first one is called the Rice’s Crossing Preserve: Yuba Rim Trail. The opening ceremonies for this trail will be held on April 18th from 10am – 2pm. Take Marysville Rd. (towards Bullards Bar Dam) and about a mile or so before the dam is where the celebration will take place. Park in the Quarry and cross the road to the meadow. The hike will take you 2.5 miles out along a ridgetop to an overlook of the confluence of the North and Middle Yuba Rivers. This is only the beginning trail of a system of trails that will eventually lead to the State Park at Bridgeport. Always bring water and sun protection when going on any hike. You just never know!

A Great Big Thanks to Larry Berg for strengthening The Paper Hut. We love being in a community where volunteers step in to help out. Hopefully it will withstand the next big wind. More and more people are putting their paper recyclables in the windows of the transfer bin. Thanks! That saves us a step as we carry bundles from the paper hut to the bin.

Look Back in Time – In 1909 the Honcut girls’ baseball team played the girls from Rackerby. This game was followed by a dinner at the Honcut Hotel, then the ice cream parlor and entertainment. (sounds like fun!)

Hope to see you in Brownsville soon. Christine and Yvonne
